Costa Calida Information

Nestled between the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol lies the unspoilt Region of the Costa Calida. Offering a stark contrast to other commercialised and over developed areas the Province of Murcia boasts rugged coastline, spectacular mountain views, pine forests and the Mar Menor lagoon.

One of the least known Regions of Spain walled off to the North, East and South by the inland mountain ranges of Andalucia, Castilla and Valencia Citrus, Almond and Olive groves and farmed using the inherited systems of irrigation first established by the ancient Muslims, which help to distribute the average annual 300mm rainfall.

The last Moorish stronghold in Spain, the area is brimming with fascinating history and architecture. Murcia City, the Province’s capital is now a bustling centre, blending the old part of the City with its magnificent Cathedral with its busy new commercial and shopping areas. Cartagena, a City and Port from where many a conquering “Armada” sailed is now the site of recently discovered Roman remains which include an Amphitheatre and associated museum.

Travelling around between pretty villages it would not be unheard of to have to stop for the local goat herdsman or horse and cart but, perhaps this will remind you that you are in the “real Spain”.

Take a trip to Puerto de Mazarrón where you will find beautiful beaches,bars,shops and restaurants. The Port is now undergoing modest development offering excellent opportunities for the holiday home or investment purchase.

Visit Mar Menor a 170 sqkm lagoon separated from the Sea by a stretch of land known as ‘La Manga’, the reputed therapeutic qualities of its high salt and iodine content together with the ‘healing muds’ of Mota de la Calcetera have tourists flocking to the area every year.

Further to the North of the Region lies Parque Natural de Espuña, a haven for hikers and climbers with 240 sqkm of unspoilt highlands and pine forests.

In the South-East corner of the Iberian Peninsula, squeezed between the better-known regions of, Andalusia, Castile-La Mancha and Valencia is the region of Murcia. It has a coastline of around 250 km. To the West is the province of Granada which is easily reached in around three to four hours. Also to the West are the province of Albacete and Almería. To the north is the province of Albacete and Alicante to the East.

The coastal area is well known with sites such as the inland sea, the Mar Menor. Nearby is the world-famous La Manga Club. From the white dunes of the beach of El Mojon in San Pedro del Pinatar the coastline stretches down to the fishing village of Aguilas.

Inland Murcia is a delight for those in search of nature, great scenery and good hospitality. The mountains and woodland are full of wild game and are frequently adorned with wonderful castles, fortresses, convents, monasteries and hermitages. Away from the coast, beautiful quiet towns, such as Bullas, Caravaca, Cehegín, Jumilla, Moratalla, Mula, and Yecla plus numerous other towns offer visitors a glimpse of the real Spain.
